We are thrilled to announce that in Winter 2026 we will be expanding our award-winning Field Guide Series by publishing a new volume:
Featuring Essays From: Chelsea Biondolillo, KJ Cerankowski, Ching-In Chen, Oliver de la Paz, Danielle Cadena Deulen, Camille T. Dungy, Jeannine Hall Gailey, Rigoberto González, torrin a. greathouse, Kimiko Hahn, Lily Hoàng, Michael Kleber-Diggs, Rowan McCandless, Sarah Minor, Rajiv Mohabir, Vi Khi Nào, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Natanya Ann Pulley, Diane Seuss, Sun Yung Shin, Brian Turner, Katrina Vandenberg, Julie Marie Wade, Chaun Webster, The Cyborg Jillian Weise, and Marco Wilkinson
In the tradition of our previous Field Guides, The RMP Field Guide to Writing the Lyric Essay will include craft essays, exercises, and creative work examples from each of the contributors. And like those seminal Field Guides to their various hybrid genres, this new Field Guide also will be an essential and inspiring resource for readers, practitioners, teachers, and admirers of the lyric essay. A lyric essay combines form, visual elements, and the music of language with research and/or deep attention to amplify resonances of sound and image and content, as well as sometimes to explore essayists’ intersectional identities. Topics covered in the new Field Guide include forms (like the braid, fragment, or hermit crab, as well as adapted poetic and non-Western ones like the zuihitsu), lyric techniques (anaphora, fractal repetition, word associations, image repetition with variation, use of white space), and lyric processes (incorporating research or visual elements, engineering leaps, and keeping a longform lyric essay going).
We look forward to sharing this groundbreaking book with you in 2026!
